Once your website is up and running, now is the time to track different aspects so that you can get better results from your website.I personally divide tracking into two segments-one is traffic tracking and another is revenue tracking.Though both of them are interrelated,I’m more comfortable with this different tracking method.
Website Traffic Tracking
Tracking your traffic is the most important part of your business. If you fail to understand your visitors and their expectations, then you’re not going to get the most out of your website.
What Tools Are Needed To Track Website Traffic?
You can use the AWStats from your host control panel. But that is not very reliable at all.So you need to use few independent website visitor tracking tools. There are two tools that are used widely-Google Analytics and Stat Counter .Google Analytics is widely accepted by the advertisers as the standard tracking tool.Where as the advantage Stat Counter has is that it gives you some more in depth tracking, like the exact keywords every users using to visit your site, their country,IP and more.It is better to use the two together.
What Are the Things To Keep Track On?
There are many things you need to keep a close eye on-
- How much Unique Visitors(UV),Visits,Page Views your website is getting and whether it is increasing or not.
- How much time they are spending on your site. From which pages most of the traffic are entering and leaving the website.
- Which are the sources that sends you the most number of traffic-Search Engines,Social media sites like Facebook,Twitter,or other sources.
- What are the pages that getting more traffic. Can you do anything more with those to get more.
- Pages that are losing traffic, what are possible reasons, doing more SEO and link building for those.
- Which are the keywords that giving more traffic from search engines, that is these are the keywords your site is ranking well in the search engines.
- Results of your social media campaigns-are you getting any significant traffic from your social media campaigns.
- Which are the pages people are using the most. You may want to give more attention to those pages.
Website Revenue Tracking
A website can have, many different types of monetization methods. The thing is you should never be over dependent on any single method. You all possible methods of monetization-AdSense,Affiliate Programs and more.
Tracking AdSense:Experiment with the positioning of the AdSense code and see which ad units are doing better. What are the pages that getting you more clicks.
Affiliate Programs:If you’re putting affiliate banners in your website see which are banners getting more clicks and converting. If you’re writing reviews then see which are reviews more effect and getting you sales.
There are many other things you need to be vigilant about your website. From the server downtime to your SEO results. So over all website owners has to be prepared to do all these hard work to see success for their business.

Tracking traffic can be fun. It is fun when an article hits the spot and visitors arrive. When traffic doesnt come, it is important to know, but not nearly as fun. Regardless, awareness of your impact on visitors is vital.
